Alfred Dunhill started making leather and automobile accessories just before the turn of the 20th century. He opened the “specialists pipe store” in 1907 after the introduction of his patented windshield pipe. In 1912 he introduced the white spot, an easy way to tell which end of the bit was up. Dunhill, still based in London, exclusively uses Premium Grade AA briar. Currently Richard Dunhill is the proprietor of the Dunhill name, and under Richard’s hand, continues to be one of the top pipe makers in the world.

The pipes come in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes. Perhaps the most influential addition to pipemaking, is the grading system to denote shapes. Groups 1-5, XL, XXL, and DR (Dead Root) are just a sampling of the nomenclature that Dunhill goes by. These are so well known by pipe enthusiasts, that many other pipe carvers relate their sizes to one of the Dunhill Groups.
